One of her brothers was shot dead while trying to escape at the Wall and her partner Andreas only survived his escape to the West with serious injuries. In order to finally reunite the family with their son Sven, whose existence Andreas only learned about in the West, Katja also dares to flee across the Hungarian-Austrian border. Without success. She is arrested, while her son ends up alone in the West. For Katja, a desperate struggle for freedom and the existence of her family now begins. A penetrating portrayal of the innermost essence of power, an exciting story about those who rule and those who suffer, about power and powerlessness, and ultimately: about perpetrators and victims. It is election night. Linda Jakobsson, married for 30 years to the Social Democratic finance minister Gert Jakobsson, sits at home on the sofa watching the election drama unfold on TV. Linda hears the commentators talking about the Social Democrats' biggest defeat, and just a glimpse of her better half on TV is enough: she can see that he has now decided to crush Prime Minister Per Viksten and take over as party leader himself. She can see it because she knows her husband as the power-hungry person he is. Mentally and physically, he has been exploiting his power over her for many years now.
