Russian immigrant tailor Avdon Moskovitz, who survived the horrors of the Holocaust and lost his wife and two young children, decides to cheat the insurance company to help his eldest son, whom he sent to his uncle in New York before the war. One day, a stranger in black shows up on the doorstep of Moskowitz's workshop. Identifying himself as an insurance company agent, he asks the tailor to answer a few questions.
